About the Department

The Department of Environmental Science was established in 2001 in association with the Department of Zoology with the objective to address local, national and international environmental problems by educating future generations about the issues and nurturing best environmental practices by preaching, practising and therefore serving generations to come. The Department offers Master and Doctoral programme in Environmental Science. In the year 2010, the post-graduation course in Environmental Science was regularized by the Government of Kerala and by February 2012, four permanent teaching faculties were appointed accordingly. From the next academic year onwards (June, 2012), the Department is bifurcated from Zoology Department as a new Post Graduate Department of Environmental Sciences.

As a relevant subject for the economic and well-being of human society, we can proudly say that the department is doing commendable activities to achieve maximum pass percentage with distinction and to enlighten all the students in the college about the importance of protection and conservation of our natural resources and consequences of unsustainable activities and indiscriminate release of pollutants. As an extension activity, we are doing consultancy services in water and wastewater management and there is a Water and Wastewater Testing Laboratory approved by Kerala State Pollution Control Board working in the Department since 2005, which was then upgraded to commercial category in 2013.

The core emphasis of the department is on Environmental Chemistry, Ecology, Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Environmental Biotechnology and Microbiology, Environmental Impact Assessment, and Environmental Engineering. Recurring ranks and recognition is the prime highlight of the department with efficient faculties excel in various fields.
