The Department of Economics was established in 1967 and offered training to the Pre-Degree and BA main Political Science students of the college. In 1996, the department was trifurcated as per the UGC directions and a separate department of Economics was established. From 2014 onwards, the department became a full-fledged department with the commencement of First Degree Programme (UG) BA in Economics. The department offers degree Programme in Economics which comprises of 14 core papers and 8 complementary papers. Economics is also offered as a complementary subject to the students of BA Programme in Political Science.
Faculty members of other colleges and resource persons are invited by the department to make lectures on current economic topics. The teachers of the department identify academically weak students and provide them remedial coaching. Students with personal problems are given counselling by the teachers and are encouraged to meet the counsellor of the college. Students are encouraged to use the library regularly and are assessed on the basis of internal exams, seminar presentations and classroom discussions etc. The department frequently organizes seminars and orientation programs for its students, and this also includes career guidance sessions handled by experts.
