The Department of English has been a part of St John’s College, since its inception in the year 1964. The major objective of the department has been to cater to the scholastic and co-scholastic needs of students.
There have been eminent teachers who have led the department with their fullness from its very beginning. BA Communicative English (restructured) was introduced in 1999, and the course being a vocation oriented one has helped many students to be placed in Media Institutions, as teachers, as social workers, as politicians, and as management employees. BA English and Communicative English (Regular scheme) was introduced in 2013.
The department has many best practices like conducting short term Teaching Internships for schools, in nearby schools; to give the latter first hand experience on micro teaching skills. As a part of their Vocational Courses, students are taken on field trips like visit to a media institution, a film making studio or even a cultural realm. The Oratory Training Programme (OTP) helps students to hone their speaking and stage skills. The classrooms are equipped with LED boards, to help them improve their skills of communication.
For the last consecutive years, the Department has been coming out in flying colours, with its students securing the top positions at the University Level. The department is also proud of the students who have been able to procure great results in Sports related activities. We have also had a Civil Service Officer, and have had many aspirants preparing to clear the UPSC examinations; and other competitive exams like the SSC, UGC NET, SET, KTET, CTET, and the like. The department organizes seminars, webinars and orientation programs for its students, and this also includes career guidance classes.
